about

Matthew Herbert’s Accidental Records are pleased to share the debut EP ‘Young Hate’ from New Delhi's Sijya, an audio-visual artist embodying the wave of fresh ideas and distinctive musicianship emerging from South Asia.

Sijya has a strong presence in the New Delhi music scene thanks to her work as a trained graphic designer, especially working closely with local platform boxout.fm. She released her first track, ‘Have To Make My Bed’ in late 2021, on the widely acclaimed SUCHI Selects compilation, which drew attention and international support from the likes of Tom Ravenscroft (BBC Radio 6 Music), Crack Magazine, DJ MAG, Rolling Stone India and Wild City.

‘Young Hate’ naturally follows on from the promise of that early single and reveals the full picture of Sijya as an artist with a strong, self-realised creative stamp. Across the 6 bittersweet, downtempo tracks, Sijya positions herself as an honest, introspective artist committed to originality without sacrificing emotional impact. The EP features music draped in laconic, minor key chord blooms underpinned by loping, scuffed beats and rounded low-end.

Given her affinity for visuals, each track from ‘Young Hate’ is accompanied by its own video, all created in collaboration with Sijya’s friends – artist Urvi Vora, Improper TV animators Mehr and Aditya, upcoming filmmakers Bhushitendu and Subodh and artist Annette Jacob – except the video for ‘Clear,’ which Sijya edited herself from her father’s home video archive.

The release of ‘Young Hate’ precedes Sijya’s first live performance, taking the prized opening slot for a breakthrough artist at India’s most prominent electronic music festival, Magnetic Fields in Rajasthan. Alongside the tracks featured on her debut EP, it will be a chance for Sijya to preview where she will head next as an artist. While concrete ideas are already forming, as she explains herself, ‘Young Hate’ “is all born out of experiments and chasing a few exciting ideas…. It’s about exploring while making.”
